Discount Window

Description

Discount window means a central bank lending facility that allows banks to borrow money directly from the central bank. In simple terms, it is an emergency or backup borrowing source for banks. The discount window is important because it can help banks meet short-term liquidity needs and support financial stability during stress. It is often used when normal funding markets become difficult. For example, a bank facing temporary funding pressure may borrow from the Fed’s discount window. The discount window is not the same as normal customer lending. It is a central bank tool for financial institutions.
