Funding Stress

Description

Funding stress means difficulty in getting short-term cash or financing. In simple terms, funding stress happens when institutions struggle to borrow the money they need. Funding stress is important because it can pressure banks, funds, companies, and markets. If funding becomes scarce or expensive, institutions may sell assets, reduce lending, or seek emergency support. For example, a spike in short-term funding rates can signal funding stress in money markets. Funding stress is not the same as insolvency. An institution may have valuable assets but still face stress if it cannot access cash quickly.
