Shares Outstanding

Description

Shares outstanding means the total number of a company’s shares currently held by investors. In simple terms, it shows how many shares of the company exist in the market. Shares outstanding are important because they affect EPS, market capitalization, ownership percentage, and dilution. If the number of shares increases, each existing share may represent a smaller ownership stake. For example, if a company has 1 billion shares outstanding and the stock price is $50, its market capitalization is $50 billion. Shares outstanding are not fixed forever. They can change through stock buybacks, new share issuance, stock options, or stock splits.
