Nominal Rate
Description
Nominal rate means the stated interest rate before adjusting for inflation.
In simple terms, nominal rate is the interest rate you see written on a loan, bond, or savings account.
Nominal rates are important because they affect actual payments, borrowing costs, and investment income. However, investors often compare nominal rates with inflation to understand the real return.
For example, if a bond pays 4% interest, 4% is the nominal rate before considering inflation.
Nominal rate is not the same as real rate. Real rate subtracts inflation to show the inflation-adjusted return or cost.
