Headline Inflation
Description
Headline inflation means the overall inflation rate that includes all items in the price index.
In simple terms, headline inflation shows how much consumer prices are rising in total.
Headline inflation is important because it reflects the price changes people may feel in everyday life, including food, energy, housing, transportation, and other goods and services. When headline inflation rises quickly, people may feel that the cost of living is getting higher.
For example, if food and gasoline prices rise sharply, headline inflation may increase even if other prices are more stable.
Headline inflation is not the same as core inflation. Headline inflation includes food and energy prices, while core inflation usually excludes food and energy because they can be very volatile.
